1. The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer
Genre: Memoir.
Michael Singer’s captivating autobiography outlines his experiences of how he “surrendered” to the will of life and went along with whatever direction life pointed him — regardless of his personal preferences or ego.
Singer explores the concept of being a “yishrey lev,” or an upright of heart, from the posuk “Ohr zarua latzaddik ule’yishrei lev simcha,” or “light shines for the righteous and for the upright of heart there is joy.”
The “yishrey lev” have joy because they accept things as they come.
They don’t see things through a personal lens of good or bad, but believe everything is all good and part of a greater plan.
The book is enlightening for people who aspire to live this way. The author reflects on the power of surrender and the potential for a more peaceful, fulfilling life through insightful anecdotes.
How this book inspired me to be my best self
This book is about the magic of life, and how it reveals itself when you allow the universe to guide you.
It’s one thing to read about magic, and another to experience it firsthand. This book called out to me from the shelves of a second-hand bookstore in the days when I was facing one of the worst dilemmas of life.
Caught between two impossible challenges, I was unable to pick one.
Singer’s words helped me let go of my will to control things, and surrender to the path the universe is showing me. This helped immensely, and I’m convinced this book played an integral part of who I am today.
Some impactful quotes from The Surrender Experiment by Michael A. Singer
“My formula for success was very simple: Do whatever is put in front of you with all your heart and soul without regard for personal results. Do the work as though it were given to you by the universe itself — because it was.”
“No matter who we are, life is going to put us through the changes we need to go through. The question is: Are we willing to use this force for our transformation? I saw that even very intense situations don’t have to leave psychological scars, if we are willing to process our changes at a deeper level.”
2. The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
Genre: Philosophy | Spirituality.
The Hero With A Thousand Faces is a 1948 book by Joseph Campbell that explores the concept of the divine aesthetic as the “one, shape-shifting yet marvelously constant story” that’s universal and infinite.
The divine aesthetic manifests itself in many ways across cultures and ages in the form of symbols and stories.
The underlying philosophies in our dreams, religion, psychology and societal norms are a gift from a source that knows us better than we know ourselves.
The book argues that we are the heroes of our own stories. The divine aesthetic accompanies us throughout life, providing comfort and guidance through challenges. Campbell also explores the idea of essential rituals within the divine aesthetic and what it means to be a hero in the modern day.
How this book inspired me to be my best self
As it’s an old book, the language was a bit difficult to connect with at first. But after the first few pages, I was drawn in.
I finished the book and felt a renewed sense of what it means to be a writer and a human. I read it during a vacation in the mountains, and the book left me with a positivity I’ve rarely found elsewhere.
The connections Campbell draws have energy, wisdom and strength in them, and they will leave you a changed person.
I wish I could express in words the peace this book left me with, but you have to read it to experience it for yourself.
Some impactful quotes from The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell
“Regrets are illuminations come too late.”
“It is only when a man tames his own demons that he becomes the king of himself if not of the world.”
“Atonement (at-one-ment) consists in no more than the abandonment of the self-generated double monster-the dragon thought to be God (superego) and the dragon thought to be Sin (repressed id). But this requires an abandonment of the attachment to ego itself, and that is what is difficult.”
3. Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
Genre: Self-help.
Have you ever felt you have the potential to do truly great things, but are too afraid to try?
If you’re stuck in that loop of self-doubt, Daring Greatly is for you.
In it, Brené Brown writes about vulnerability and its connection to shame and guilt. She encourages you to be brave and take risks, even if it means being too embarrassed to attempt.
According to her research, emotional vulnerability cannot be achieved without risking it all. Being vulnerable is a gift that makes people more honest and complete.
The best part about the book is that Brown doesn’t detail specific ways to become emotionally vulnerable but offers ideas and direction for those who want to learn.
How this book inspired me to be my best self
Having watched TED talks by the author, I was familiar with her research, and this book wasn’t filled with new concepts. But even then, reading it was exactly the reminder I needed to take charge of my life and dream beyond what I was limiting myself to.
This book may not solve all your problems, but it excels at calling you out. It will push you to identify your harmful habits accurately. The simple act of naming your negative emotions and feelings can take away some of their power, at least, that’s how I felt.
It’s a valuable read, and the topics she brings up need to be addressed.
Some impactful quotes from Daring Greatly by Brené Brown
“Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen.”
“The willingness to show up changes us, It makes us a little braver each time.”
“Nothing has transformed my life more than realizing that it’s a waste of time to evaluate my worthiness by weighing the reaction of the people in the stands.”
