Katauta/Sedoka
Stolen reflections
the moon caught in those dark waves
traces the curve of your smile.
The wind brings me whiffs
of kisses you sent my way.
All those words you’d never say.
(The katauta is a Japanese poetic form considered an incomplete or half-poem. It is a 3-liner that follows 5–7–7 syllables per line and is specifically addressed to a lover. When paired together, two katautas act as a question and answer conversation between lovers to form a sedoka.)
Author’s Note: The above is an excerpt from my book, Stolen Reflections: Some Stories Are Told in Verse. The book explores love and is a celebration of poetry, not just the modern free verse, but over 15 different traditional poetry forms as well.
