My Article Got Rejected…
The bitter truth about being a freelance writer in 2021.
We all stumble at some point in our life, but this is a mistake I deeply regret.
The first time I submitted an article to a reputed online magazine, I worked on it for two weeks. The prize money for an accepted article was $200. That was almost equal to ₹15,000 which was crazy money for a beginner.
I wrote and rewrote the content, clicked and edited pictures, made charts, and polished the article to perfection.
But guess what the email from the editor said a few days later?
“We’re sorry but the article isn’t up to our editorial standards. Due to the high volume of requests we receive, we cannot provide feedback to individual articles. However, we encourage you to keep writing and look forward to your submission in the future.”
I was at a loss for what to do. I asked all my writer friends about their take on this, and everyone said they couldn’t see a single way I could have improved my article.
I felt lost, defeated, that my hard work for more than fifteen days was meaningless.
Looking back, I now realize that my article was indeed perfect from my point of view, but it lacked the structure most successful articles have.
I had added pictures, but the flow was missing, which made the article feel disjointed and rambling.
It took me about a year to learn the tricks of writing articles that got accepted into reputed online publications. Today, I charge $800 for a well-researched article that takes me about 5 hours to write.
This just goes on to show that you’ll constantly be evolving on your journey to be a successful writer, and every rejection can be a valuable lesson.
If you’ve ever worked hard on an article only to get rejected, remember that to a creative, there are no rejections, only redirections.
To help new writers get started with building a personal brand and earning money from their writing, I’m doing a 5-day live training program.
I have only a few more seats remaining before I close enrolments.
Click here to join before seats are full. We will start on 15th Dec, 8:30 PM.
