What I Learned About Writing After I Started Doing It Full-Time

Lessons from three years of self-employment.

In a month, it will be three years of me quitting my engineering job to be a full-time writer.

Over the past three years, I’ve learned multiple lessons about writing. The biggest of them has been this: Being a full-time writer doesn’t mean you get to write all day.

A huge chunk of my time goes in content research, admin work, social media strategy and publishing, and creating and sending invoices.

If I’d known this before jumping into this career path….well, maybe I’d have been better prepared.

But then again, no matter how much information you have, can you ever be fully prepared? You’ve to wing a lot of things, learn on the go, always be on your toes, be flexible, and prepared to upskill.

These three years as a self-employed person haven’t been easy by any account. But they’ve been hugely transformative and have taught me many valuable lessons.
